COLUMBUS PUTS MO-PED RIDERS ON NOTICE
The Columbus Police Department will begin enforcing a state insurance requirement for mo-ped and scooter operators. Chief Jason Maddix says state law requires riders to have minimum coverage of $25,000 for personal injury or death and $10,000 for property damage. Officers will use judgment as riders come into compliance with the measure. Maddix says the law is not a primary offense, so officers can’t stop someone specifically for not having the insurance. Last year, a rider was killed in a rear-end collision on National Road in Columbus.
